Why I’m Opening a Pop-Up Shop - And Why It Matters to Our High Streets

This summer, I’m opening my very first pop-up shop - and it’s not just a milestone for Miller & Chalk, but something I hope inspires a little shift in how we think about our high streets.

From 2nd to 10th August, I’ll be setting up shop in a previously empty retail space on Towcester High Street, turning it into a temporary home for all things Miller & Chalk: our signature feather-filled cushions, table linen, lampshades, antique finds, and more. Everything we sell is designed and made right here in Northamptonshire, in my little design studio tucked away in the village of Astcote.

But here’s the bigger picture.

When I first set out to find a pop-up location, I imagined it would be easy. A short-term let in an empty shop? Win-win, surely. I quickly discovered that wasn’t the case. Most landlords weren’t open to temporary leases. Many were holding out for long-term tenants, even while their spaces sat unused.

It was frustrating, and for a while, I wondered if the dream would have to wait.

But finally - after a lot of emails, phone calls and a little help from the universe - I found a landlord who got it. Someone who believed that shops shouldn’t stay empty when they could be filled with creativity, craft, and community spirit.

That’s what this pop-up means to me. It’s not just about selling cushions (though I can’t wait to show you the new ones!). It’s about what can happen when local businesses are given a chance to take up space - even temporarily. It’s about imagining high streets with rotating small brands, seasonal shops, and ever-changing windows. It’s about breathing life back into quiet corners.

The shop itself will be styled just like our brand - warm, earthy, inviting. You’ll be able to see and feel our pieces in real life, ask questions, pick out fabric samples, and get a real sense of the care we put into every detail.

And if you’re local? Please do come say hello. Even if it’s just to browse or have a chat. Supporting independent businesses isn’t always about buying something - it’s about showing up.

This pop-up might be a one-off - or it might be the beginning of something more permanent. Either way, I hope it’s a little spark of possibility. And I’m proud that it’s happening right here in Northamptonshire.

With love,
